Highlights of Your Visit

The Cathedral Nave

Requires a ticket. Marvel at the soaring Gothic vaults, which reach a height of 43.5 meters. Don't miss the Shrine of the Three Kings behind the main altar, the stunning medieval stained-glass windows, and the Gero Cross, one of the oldest large crucifixes north of the Alps.

South Tower Climb

Requires a ticket. Prepare for a strenuous but rewarding climb of 533 steps up a narrow spiral staircase. The viewing platform, 97 meters high, offers unparalleled panoramic views of Cologne, the Rhine River, and the surrounding landscape. You'll also pass the belfry with the massive St. Peter's Bell.

The Cathedral Treasury

Requires a ticket. Located in the cathedral's medieval cellars, the Domschatzkammer holds a priceless collection of liturgical objects, precious reliquaries, textiles, and sculptures from the 4th to the 20th century, showcasing the immense historical and artistic wealth of the cathedral.

Getting to the Cathedral

The cathedral's location at Domkloster 4, 50667 Köln, makes it incredibly easy to reach. It stands directly next to Cologne Central Station (Köln Hauptbahnhof). If you arrive by train, you will see the twin spires the moment you exit the station.

From Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN), the S-Bahn train S13 or S19 will take you directly to the main station in about 15 minutes. For those driving, the "Parkhaus Am Dom" is located directly beneath the cathedral square. Numerous tram and bus lines also stop at "Dom/Hbf".

Practical answers for your trip

How much time should I allocate for a visit?
Allow about 30 minutes for the main nave. The tower climb takes 30-45 minutes, and a visit to the treasury takes about 45-60 minutes. A complete visit to all three areas will take around 2 to 2.5 hours.
Is there a dress code?
Yes, as an active place of worship, visitors are asked to dress respectfully. Shoulders and knees should be covered, and hats should be removed upon entry. See our rules page for more.
Are there restrooms available?
Public restrooms are located outside the cathedral, near the entrance to the tower climb and the underground car park.
Can I bring a bag or backpack?
Only small bags (up to A4 size, or roughly 40x35x15cm) are permitted inside. Larger bags, luggage, and hiking backpacks are not allowed and cannot be stored on site.
Are guided tours available?

Is the tower climb difficult?
The climb involves 533 steps in a narrow, winding staircase and is physically demanding. It is not recommended for visitors with cardiovascular conditions, respiratory issues, or claustrophobia.
